It’s the end of an era for Argos fans. The retailer will stop printing its famous catalogue after almost 50 years. Of course, this is the result of its focus on ecommerce. The most recent Argos catalogue accounted for 3.9 million printed copies.
Argos started with its printed catalogue in 1972. Since then, the bi-annual publication was very popular. It’s said that it once was found in three-quarters of homes in the United Kingdom, with only the bible being more popular among households.

Products will now be only listed online
The upcoming end of the catalogue is the result of Argos’ move towards ecommerce. The retailer says that online shopping offers “greater convenience” than browsing through its print catalogue. The last catalogue was printed in January and was copied 3.9 million times. Now, the products will be only listed and displayed online.
‘Our customers’ shopping habits have changed’
“Just as our customers’ tastes have changed over the years, so have their shopping habits. We are seeing an increasing shift towards digital shopping, using our mobile app, website and in-store browsers”, said Mark Given, chief marketing officer at Argos owner Sainsbury’s. “Closing the book on the catalogue will help us focus on delivering exciting and inspiring digital shopping experiences to meet the changing needs of our customers.”

Argos explained that although the catalogue stops existing, the retailer will still continue to prints its Christmas Gift Guide.
